Andrea Slinde Has Golden Roots

By now you may know about our commitment to our rituals. We both keep sacred morning and evening rituals that promote and reinforce our wellness. They are acts of self-care and self-love. One ritual we share is drinking a warm beverage in the morning. One we haven’t been as vocal about is how we wind down in the evening. We airplane mode our phones, we meditate and again we ground ourselves with a beverage.

We had heard of homemade Golden Milk concoctions made with turmeric, pepper, and other ingredients but had never been able to assemble them on our own. Well we could, but they tasted like sh*t. Insert Golden Root. Golden Root, the colorful child of Andrea Slinde, does the dirty work for us and allows us to sip the benefits with a quick rip and stir. It was a no brainer to partner with Golden Root and to kick it off we put Andrea on the hot seat to talk turmeric and wellness routines.

There definitely is a buzz surrounding turmeric at the moment, but it’s actually been used in other cultures for a very long time. Eastern cultures have been drinking turmeric beverages, in the form of Golden Milk, for centuries.

The beautiful thing about turmeric is its active ingredient, called curcumin. Curcumin is one of the only compounds that can cross the blood brain barrier, which increases the positive effects it has on brain health and inflammation. This alone is what attracted me to use turmeric in my diet to help combat the inflammation we live with every day.

We all live with a low line of acute or chronic inflammation. As athletes, we know what inflammation feels like because it shows up as uncomfortable pain, cramping, tension, and tightness. But anyone can live with consistent levels of inflammation that are far less noticeable. Stress, lack of sleep, and irritability are all signs of inflammation in the body, so I felt like an easy-to-use turmeric drink could help reduce this daily inflammation and I wanted to share it with the world.

I had been using fresh and raw turmeric in my cooking, smoothies, baking, and then began to make my own Golden Milk at home. The recipe I was using was cumbersome and I sought ways to make the process a little easier for myself and anyone who was also new to Golden Milk. I wanted it in a form that would encourage a newcomer to try it out. That’s when I landed with a powdered recipe. Not only is it more accessible as a powder, but it is also far more shelf stable and transportable. It can be shared, taken to work, the mountains, the beach or anywhere in the city. I wanted that for accessibility to wellness for myself and others. That’s why I started Golden Root.

To me, wellness is being intentional with my actions, and also my thoughts. Many parts of our lives are out of balance and wellness rituals can help guides us on a continuous journey of understanding what balance is to you. Focusing on wellness makes me feel good from the inside out. Wellness is positive self talk, the language with which we speak to ourselves, and quality sleep. Our wellness rituals can help balance both body and mind, allowing us to project the best version of ourselves.

My biggest thing is spending time alone. I didn’t realize how much I needed alone time because I spent most of my life being quite social and extroverted. It wasn’t until after college that I realized how valuable spending time alone is for my mind. When I focus on turning inward, I can better process my thoughts and actions and I return with stronger intentions.

Alone time can look different for everyone. For me, it’s going for a walk where I think, listen to a podcast, to just move in silence. As a tactile person, I also like to keep my hands moving when I’m processing my day or big ideas, so I like to knit. Knitting allows me to get into a flow, and travel to a distant mental space which is such a peaceful journey.

I want to bring all the ingredient sourcing for Golden Root closer to the US to reduce the distance that they have to travel to get into your cup. Right now I source most of my ingredients from India, however, there could be an opportunity in the future to source many of my ingredients from areas of the US, or Central or South America, where the climate is similar to that of parts of India.

Anywhere in India. I’d love to consume it in very authentic and local way. In a cafe, on a street corner, with community. It’s such a special drink for me here, so going exploring and learning the true roots of Golden Milk would be a dream.

One thing to consider with recipes is that I believe the environment in which you drink Golden Milk is so important. I prefer to wind down at night with a cup of Golden Root or sip on one right after physical activity to help kickstart the recovery process. Here is one of my favorite ways to make Golden Root:

Sweet & Spicy Golden Root Turmeric Latte

  • Heat 10oz of homemade cashew milk

  • Add 2.5 teaspoons or 1 sachet of Sugar Free Golden Root Turmeric Latte Mix to blender

  • Add heated milk, a dash of vanilla extract, and 1/2 teaspoon of honey to blender

  • Blend until fully mixed and pour into mug

  • Top with a dash of cinnamon

Homemade Cashew Milk Recipe

  • Soak 1 cup of raw cashews for a couple of hours, then rinse

  • Blend 1 cup cashews with 2 cups of water, a dash a vanilla extract and a pinch of salt on medium

  • Add 2 more cups of water and blend on high for 1-2 minutes

  • Strain milk, if desired

  • Store in fridge for up to 1 week
